Google Cardboard

First among our reviews is the Cardboard VR headset initially introduced by Google. Featuring a utilitarian design, this model is made out of AAA corrugated paper but offers a few improvements over the basic first model. Price-wise, it’s the most affordable option, but not by a large margin. For those who just want to try virtual reality, this is the best choice.

Besides it has easy-to-assemble cardboard set, there’s a longer head strap for more convenience. Aside from that, you get a forehead pad and padding for your nose to prevent discomfort. Finally, there’s a suction cup pad that helps keep your phone from sliding out of its socket. All these changes make using this product a more enjoyable experience.

When you open up the box, all you have to do is follow the instructions printed on the unit. There are slots, Velcro, and some sticky tape which make for a quick and engaging assembly process.

Before you place it on your head, you will need to download the Google Cardboard VR app. After that, you can start using it with different apps and services like YouTube to watch 360 videos. This device is compatible with any smartphone that’s 3.5-6″ inches in size.

IFB360 3D VR Glasses

Next in our list of cheap VR glasses is the IFB360. This product is a step up in comfort, but it’s not as good as some products for smaller screen phones. Moreover, it has some a few design flaws that can detract from the overall experience.

Made out of white plastic, the Magi Coo VR headset fits tight around your eyes and nose. It has adjustable black straps and a cushion for the back of your head. The front of the mask has a hinged compartment which holds your phone with a grid of suction cups.

Once you’ve installed the app you need, all you have to do is put your mobile in place. You can use any smartphone that will fit in the designated compartment. Be aware that smaller devices will affect the viewing quality, so it’s best if your phone fits tightly. What’s more, the suction cups used might not work with some covers. To navigate through menus, you can use the button on the bottom of this VR headset, but it’s not always reliable. If you need to adjust the lenses, you can do so by rotating the cones.

SARLAR 3D VR Glasses

The third model in our top cheap VR headsets line-up is the Sarlar 3D. For a somewhat higher price, you get more comfort, but at the cost of versatility. Namely, there are no buttons for interaction, so out of the box, this unit is ideal for videos and movies. This problem can be solved by using a separate Bluetooth controller. If you want to step into an immersive world of virtual reality and 3D, this might be the thing for you.

This model comes with an adjustable head strap and provides padding around your eyes and nose. In the front, there’s a compartment with a hinge and padding instead of suction cups. Furthermore, there’s a set of adjustable brackets that accommodate different size phones.

To begin using this unit, you should install all the 3D apps that you want to use. After that, you can place your mobile inside and close the compartment. Once inside it should sit firmly in place against the padding. To set the focus of the lenses, you can rotate the built-in adjuster on the bottom of this VR headset. Bnext 3D VR Headset

The last product among our cheap smartphone VR headset units is the Bnext 3D. For a bump in the price-tag, you get a great looking model that can handle a lot of different smartphones. However, the most obvious downside is the lack of an action or interaction button. Once again, this does limit functionality but can be solved with a Bluetooth controller in some cases.

This device comes with adjustable Velcro straps with three points, so that it sits snugly on your head. For added comfort, there is padding that goes around your eyes and nose. The mask has openings on its side for headphones, and a sliding door to expose your phone’s camera.

To start using this model, you should first download all the applications that you wish to use. You can try out 360 videos on YouTube and 3D movies, as well as games and other programs.

Be aware that it’s not possible to use the Google Cardboard app because it requires a button. Before you put your mobile device inside, you will need to remove its cover. This model supports iPhone, Windows and Android products with 4-6″ screen sizes.

HTC VIVE – Virtual Reality System

For us, and many others, the HTC Vive VR headset is the best money can buy when it comes to virtual reality. This unit offers the most out of all the high-end products we tested. It excels in categories like comfort, immersion and image quality.

The Vive has a sleek black design, and a quick adjust three point strap system. It also has soft padding that blocks out light and provides a fatigue-free experience for long sessions. If you wear glasses, this model will fit the majority of rims. This is the only VR headset for PC that offers room-scale VR through its base stations. That way you can jump, crouch, and move around. Other than that, you get two WiFi controllers for navigation in menus and games.

This set is not the easiest to set up, in hardware or software terms. But, once installed, this HTC model has superior tracking and the sharpest image quality in comparison to everything we have tried. You can use it with Steam VR which has quite a few supported games available. Switching to your desktop is also possible if necessary. Keep in mind, though, that you have to have a higher-end PC to get the most out of this virtual reality headset.
